TOEFL versus IELTS
Counselor at CURIO Education
Hi Curios!
There’s an abundance of information already available on the interwebs documenting the difference between these two English proficiency exams. This is a great resource for a comprehensive comparison of the both of them!
For this post, I would like to share some resources that make it easier for you to navigate the logistics of the TOEFL and IELTS, depending on which stage of the application you’re in!
For first time TOEFL test takers:
If you are taking the TOEFL outside of mainland China, this is the website you go to for relevant testing information and registration.
For folks in mainland China, this is the website you should go to for relevant information and registration.
For rising seniors ready to send their TOEFL scores:
Here is a comprehensive list of college TOEFL codes that you can copy and paste into your respective TOEFL website to have TOEFL send your scores to your selected colleges. MyBestScore was not widely considered by colleges for the 2020 high school graduation cohort – we are yet to see if it will gain more prevalence for the 2021 and beyond high school graduation cohort!
IELTS:
IELTS’ score sending procedure differs from country to country. Please check the relevant country’s IELTS’ website for specific information.
I would HIGHLY advise you to select a country where English is a strong business language (Singapore highly recommended – majority of the population are proficient in English and Manadarin). If there are any issues with IELTS score sending, you will have to liaise with an IELTS employee in the country you took your IELTS in, so to save you the trouble of communication barriers in the future, please consider the countries mentioned above first.
It is important to have the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) ready to submit to schools, usually submitted digitally or via mail through the country’s IELTS website, or by communicating with the IELTS country representative to have them send it manually to colleges. It is important to save the official paper copy for your records.
